Strange Days (1999)
"Strange Days" was directed by Bill Morrison and Matthew Good. It was the third video to be released off of Beautiful Midnight. The video features a local homeless girl from Vancouver.
The video follows a young homeless girl’s struggle and ultimate sacrifice. She begs for change outside a downtown office tower but is repeatedly ignored by passersby. As odd phenomena, like the street shifting from day to dusk, unfold, flashbacks reveal her fleeing an abusive father. Matthew Good appears disheveled and unshaven throughout, interacting with characters yet remaining unseen. The climax sees the girl pushing a woman out of harm’s way, giving her life in the process. In the aftermath, the girl’s spirit watches paramedics, finally acknowledging a now clean-shaven Good in a black suit, ushering her toward a bright light in the tunnel.
Filming took place at the Chateau Granville/Best Western and along the downtown streets of Granville, the pigeon scene was at Stanley Park.
The blonde women near the end, seen speaking to a brunette, is the same woman who played the woman with glasses in Apparitions.
Commentary
"I'm actually dead. I'm kinda the grim reaper in a way. Most of the video I'm a homeless guy and there's a big reveal at the end where I am not the homeless guy but the ANGEL of DEATH!" - Matthew Good
"Alright, well, I'll tell you this, at the end, Matt appears naked, so you have to watch the whole thing...full frontal" - Dave Genn
