Weapon (2002)
"Weapon" was directed by Matthew Good and Ante Kovac. It was the first video to be released off of Avalanche.
The video begins with Matthew Good walking toward a single microphone on a pitch-black stage. As he sings, stark spotlights cut through the darkness to silhouette him and his band. Quick-cut still frames appear between performance shots, featuring chopped newsprint, weapon imagery, and grainy stock photos overlaid with bold text.
The video was filmed on October 5, 2002, at Pier 94 in New York City under the direction of Ante Kovac. After rejecting the initial edit, Good traveled to Toronto to collaborate with editor Jay Deschamps on the final cut. This version won the 2003 Juno Award for Best Video although Matthew Good was not present to accept it. Ante Kovac accepted the award though he neglected to acknowledge Good.
Controversy
"I guess I won a Juno for best video the other day. I heard in a bathroom backstage in Montreal. Of course there was no mention of me in Ante Kovac's acceptance speech. He also failed to mention that I fired him halfway through the making of the video. Life's funny like that, isn't it." - Matthew Good
