Vogue Theatre to Close in January

November 19, 2005 04:50 AM UTC

It has come to my attention that the Vogue Theatre will be closing its doors this January 1st, 2006. The Vogue, having been recently acquired by a new set of owners, is slated to become a new "supper club" for the downtown Vancouver Area.

Established in 1941, the Vogue Theatre is one of Vancouver's oldest venues and has hosted an assortment of live performances (thousands). Of the many bands and artists that have performed over at the Vogue (our very own Matthew Good and the late Matthew Good Band are included) the theatre has also hosted several notable theatrical performances (Rent and The Vagina Monologues for example), the Vancouver Film Festival, the Vancouver Comedy Festival, The Vancouver Jazz Festival, and Vancouver Theatresports.

As Vancouver has mainly three all-ages venues, the Vogue Theatre being one, the only viable venue remaining would be the Croatian Cultural Centre. In the long run this could mean fewer concerts in the Greater Vancouver Area which would admit people under the age of 19.

Some notable bands/performers that have played at the Vogue: Matthew Good / Matthew Good Band, Death Cab For Cutie, The Killers, Bif Naked, Blur, Bruce Cockburn, A Perfect Circle, Nelly Furtado, Carrot Top, Hayden, David Usher, Amanda Marshall, Michael Moore, Los Lobos, Sonic Youth, Badly Draw Boy, Vanessa Carlton, Sigur Ros, The Temptations, Michelle Branch, Rufus Wainright, Prozzak, Chris Isaac, Serial Joe, Crash Test Dummies, Mike Bullard, Natalie McMaster, Great Big Sea, Philosopher Kings, Coheed and Cambria, Hawksley Workman, Frank Black, Gob, Cake, Sarah Harmer, and Sloan.

Notable reads: Georgia Straight on the Vogue.
