the national is probably one of the best bands in recent memory. one of few 'indie' acts that, while managing to fit into that genre, is also impossible to pigeonhole to the genre because of their vastness in styles.

 

the new album 'boxer' is fucking phenominal.

 

as for older stuff, the album 'alligator' is their most eclectic, and probably the best place to look to hear just how different they can perform.

 

if you haven't heard of them, see if you can find songs like 'the geese of beverly road', 'lit up', 'mr november', and 'daughters of the soho riots'. all of which are off 'alligator'.

Steer clear of their self-titled though. Also the virginia EP isn't worth it imo...and that documentary "A Skin, A Night" is fucking terrible...tried too hard to be artistic...said nothing..sucked....can't win them all...bottom line...

i bought the virginia EP when it came out, and STILL haven't bothered to watch that documentary.

 

as the pitchfork review of it pointed out, it probably would've been better to at least release the film prior to the release of boxer... it would've proved to have been a more interesting film at that point, i think. and yeah, the EP itself is a bit useless since those songs hve been around for quite some time, but it is nice to have them all in one place.

Yeah the National rock my socks and ruin my boxers. Have you heard any of the EP's like Virginia or the Cherry Tree? There's an interesting, earlier version of Slow Show on Virginia that is pretty interesting. Lacks the punch of the chorus in the album version though.

I've heard individual tracks off them. I think the version of Slow Show I have is that one.
