sorry i'm a bit "illiterate" in your political situation... which is the party ruling Canada right now? And what is the main preference of Canadians here?

that way i will learn a bit more about your culture ;)

Most Canadians who post here are probably either left-leaning Liberals or NDP supporters. The Liberals are the party of the Centre, the NDP are on the left and the Conservatives are on the right. The Bloc Quebecois are a mostly left-leaning separatist party from Quebec.

The Liberals have governed Canada since 1993.

thanx a lot for explaining that to me, Tim ;)

so, according to your first post, Canadians are more centre-left oriented, right?

do you think the left party could rule Canada with the suport of the centre party (or viceversa)?

This is exactly what is happening in Spain: the socialist party, PSOE, (which is a more centre-left party) is ruling Spain with the support from the really left party (IU) and a nationalist catalan party (ERC, also left party)

We're 'supposed' to have them 3 years from now, but there is no way in hell it will be that long.

Those conservative m-fers are probably going to pull the plug within the month.

FAAAAALK!!! I wish they'd wait until july. I want to vote...

Elections are held when either the government loses a vote of confidence or the Prime Minister decides to call one, to a maximum of five years after the previous election. Four years is the standard term, but the average minority government in Canada lasts one and a half years. Coalitions are much less common in Canada because the (unfortunate) nature of the electoral system makes majority parliaments (where one party has more than half the seats) common; parties are not used to having to cooperate.

Do they by law actually have to call it every 5 years? Or is that just a convention that's been accepted. I vaguely remember my first year poli-sci class saying something about Canada not having a law limiting how long a party can rule for (assuming it still has the confidence of the house). As for voting I have yet to vote in any election, for various reasons.

It can only last longer than five years by an act of parliament, which has only been used once, during wartime - if anybody tried to do it again there would be public outrage and a constitutional crisis, the Governor General would probably just dissolve parliament anyway.

I was watching Global News tonight, and they had some polls up. But they also mentioned that these poll results were similar to what they were before the last election.

So don't get your hopes up too high there in Calgary, Dave.

p.s. Bizud, i think the Liberals are more left-of-centre than centre. At least in how they govern.

Other than a few token progressive measures (gay marriage, marijuana legalization) that most people have either long moved on about or are in the process of doing so, they're definitely further to the right than, say, Trudeau's Liberals. The past ten years have seen tax cuts, service cuts, and more privatization than nationalization, and none of the cuts made during the Mulroney era have been reversed. Paul Martin's said it himself when the Chretien Liberals took office: "If the government doesn't need to run something it shouldn't. And in the future, it won't." That makes him centre-right, not centre-left.
