Indestructible Vs. Cry

Anyone here know the song Cry by Simple Minds? You know, the same band that did that Breakfast Club song Don't You Forget About Me?

 

If you don't know it, download it, and it's unmistakable that these two songs (Indestructible and Cry) have the very same chorus riff.

 

Looking at release dates, Underdogs was released in 1998, while Simple Minds' album Cry was released in 2002.

 

Has Matt Good been given credit for this stolen riff?

Wow! I just noticed the same thing, not fifteen minutes ago, and was going to post this exact thread.

 

I wouldn't know the answer though, does anyone have the Simple Minds album?

granted I know very little about musical theory, but remember there is going to be a finite set of riffs that can be produced, and even less that are going to sound harmonious and such. SO theres bound to be similiarity at some point.

 

 

but having said this I'll go listen to both songs when I get home, assuming I can find cry.

yeah this has been beaten around several times, although i have never heard what happened with matt and the simple minds.

Yah, no one has ever gone into details about it but it has been taken care of, or so we are told. I believe that whatever Matt and co. did, they now have shared writing credits for that song. But I might be wrong.

There's also a slight similarity between Jimmy Eat World's 23 and Everything is Automatic (just in the beginning)

I think that the Jimmy Eat World thing is an example of an accidental similar sound, but there's no denying how similar Cry is to Indestructable.

I'm sure none of you have ever heard of them, but if you look up their song "Available Memory" (which might be very hard to find), and is also a rocking song, the end sounds like a Matthew Good riff, but I can't pick out just which one yet.

Also, wasn't indestructible the song that Matthew Good sold to someone else, in terms of arrangement? Or was that another song?

That is wild the similarity. I wonder if MG got some money from that one of if being given credit was enough. I think about Echos by Pink Floyd and Lloyd Webber's Phantom. Another example of a stolen riff, but never pursued.
