Your Ideal 2011 Tour Setlist?

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago Matt posted on his blog a list of songs being focused on in rehearsals to be played during the upcoming tour. He said that the full band is focusing on a list of 27 songs, plus he posted another list of 16 songs (if you include While We Were Hunting Rabbits) that could be played solo acoustic in the encores. Go here for his list of songs.

Given that he'll play about 12 songs in the main set and about 4 songs in the encore during each show, your job is to choose 12 songs from the 1st list of 27 songs that you would ideally like to hear during the full-band main set of a concert on the upcoming tour (just pretend that you'll only get to see one show, no matter if you're actually going to more or to none), and then choose an additional 4 songs from the list of 15 (plus 'Rabbits') solo acoustic songs you'd most like to hear during the encore (yes i know he may not play all solo stuff in the encore, just play along). RULE: you can't take a song on his acoustic list and put it on your full-band "main set" list and vice versa.

GO!!

My setlist (in no order):

MAIN SET:

How It Goes

Shallow's Low

Non Populus

Zero Orchestra

Great Whales Of The Sea

Volcanoes

Blue Skies Over Bad Lands

Weapon

Black Helicopter

Hello Time Bomb

Avalanche

Lights Of Endangered Species

ENCORE:

While We Were Hunting Rabbits

Fated

Bright End of Nowhere

Prime Time Deliverance

Man, choosing the encore was tough!

I would go for the encores, a lot of favs in that list. I would be VERY excited to hear rabbits acoustic. A little shocked he's not gonna do more early MGB with Ian along for the tour, seems like it'd be a bit easier since he'd be familiar with the songs. regardless it's still cool MG takes the time to throw that up there so you know what to expect.

As for a set list, i'll play along, even throw it in a playable order and cut 2 songs from the main set for more encore songs!

weapon

stars

non populous

load me up

set me on fire

boy

champs

born losers

silent army

blue skies

apparitions

encore(all acoustic)

so long ms. smith

true love

empty road

gen X

suburbia

rabbits

rabbits

rabbits

rabbits

rabbits

bright end

boy and his machine gun (acoustic)

I would drive up to TO if that were the set list.

This is what I came up with in a shortlived discussion thread on Matt's site, based on the 12-13 song main set 2-3 encore, plus acoustic for good measure:

Great Whales of the Sea (hold that D at the end and segue into...)

Load Me Up

Weapon

Zero Orchestra

The Future is X-Rated

Born Losers

What if I Can't See the Stars, Mildred?

Avalanche

Non Populus

Black Helicopter

A Silent Army in The Trees

Odette

Apparitions

Encore:

Lights of Endangered Species

Volcanoes

It's Been a While Since I Was Your Man

Sort of a Protest Song

Prime Time Deliverance

1. Zero Orchestra

2. What If I Can't See the Stars Mildred?

3. Non Populus

4. The Boy Who Could Explode

5. Blue Skies Over Bad Lands

6. Black Helicopter

7. Odette

8. Avalanche

9. Weapon

10. I'm A Window

11. Apparitions

12. Shallow's Low

13. While We Were Hunting Rabbits

14. Bright End of Nowhere

15. Suburbia

16. Prime Time Deliverance

Some of that was very tough to choose between. There were various factors that went into picking those, they aren't all necessarily my favourite 16 songs out of the 43.

Other than some of the stuff in the encore and the new stuff, it seems like the same as the last tour.

So my ideal setlist is:

Anything new

Champions (always love that song live)

Then for an BIG encore

Rabbits !!!!

Prime Time Deliverance

Advertising On Police Cars

Suburbia

Bright End Of Nowhere

Sort Of A Protest Song

A little shocked he's not gonna do more early MGB with Ian along for the tour, seems like it'd be a bit easier since he'd be familiar with the songs.

Some of that stuff hasn't been played since around 2001, so it's understandable that it is more focused on some favorites and newer material.

Other than some of the stuff in the encore and the new stuff, it seems like the same as the last tour.

It is basically a new band, and I'd rather see them start with the 25 songs they have now and learn them really well than trying to overdo themselves. I imagine, like in past years, as the tour goes on, some other songs may start to creep in depending on their comfort level, which bodes well for me, as I'll be at the 2nd last show of the tour. I remember during the first acoustic tour, Calgary was one of the earlier stops, so I missed out on the stuff that ended up being on Hospital Music.

Interesting set of rules... Here would be mine based what was laid out, I think I would do more of a rocking main set if encore was all acoustic:

Giant

The Future is X-Rated

What If I Can't See the Stars Mildred?

The Boy Who Could Explode

Set Me On Fire

Alert Status Red

Load Me Up

Hello Time Bomb

Zero Orchestra

Born Losers

Non Populus

Weapon

Acoustic Encore:

Apparitions

Prime Time Deliverance

Fated

While We Were Hunting Rabbits

I know Apparitions isn't on the acoustic list and will be played full band (I hope without slide guitar this time), but it didn't really fit with the main set I made and I would way rather see it acoustic anyway. That main set is more one Matt would play for a rowdy festival crowd, although if there was an all acoustic encore I had to jam more of those songs in there, and I've always kind of wanted to see one of those types of shows. Here's a setlist not adhering to the rules above that I think would be very realistic for this tour at a more standard theatre show:

Set Me On Fire

A Silent Army in the Trees

Lights of Endangered Species

Born Losers

I'm a Window

Load Me Up

What If I Can't See the Stars Mildred?

The Boy Who Could Explode

Zero Orchestra

Apparitions

Weapon

Non Populus

Encore:

Fated (acoustic)

While We Were Hunting Rabbits (acoustic)

Giant

The Future is X-Rated

Alert Status Red

I think my ideal setlist would consist of Non Populus being played 15 times in a row.

Well maybe not, but man do I love that song. Sometimes I will turn my iPod all the way up and just replay the ending over and over. I'm gonna regret it when I'm old.

Here's my shot at a "dream" setlist on the US tour from what he has be practicing with the band. I'll be seeing him in New York (hopefully ;) ):

- - - - -

Main Set

- - - - -

What If I Can't See The Stars, Mildred?

How It Goes

Zero Orchestra

A Silent Army In The Trees

It's Been A While Since I Was Your Man

Shallow's Low

Hello Time Bomb

I'm A Window

Volcanoes

Last Parade

Set Me On Fire

Non Populus

- - - - -

Encore

- - - - -

Giant

Hornets

Bright End Of Nowhere (Acoustic)

Fated (Acoustic)

Lights of Endangered Species

I left off some popular choices like Weapon, Born Losers, Load Me Up, etc. simply because I've heard them live already. This is a good mix for me consisting of songs that I did not hear on the previous tour + the new stuff.

it really doesn't matter what matt plays cuz he's that amazing. if i had to pick, the setlist would look something like this.

Non Populus

Lights Of Endangered Species

A Silent Army In The Trees

Apparitions

Weapon

Avalanche

Champions Of Nothing

Born Losers

Alert Status Red

Blue Skies Over Bad Lands

It's Been A While Since I Was Your Man

How It Goes

and the encore

  1. Metal Airplanes
  2. Prime Time Deliverance
  3. Fated
  4. Sort Of A Protest Song

choosing the encore was really hard and i think i would probably mix up the setlist later on.

Ideal setlist based on Matthew Good's song list would look somthing like this.

I also took into consideration some songs that :

1. Seem to be over played on most sets like apparations and

2. songs that I have heard too much on his tours like avalanche.

The songs are also in the order I would like to see them played

...

1. Set Me on Fire

2. The Boy Who Could Explode

3. Alert Status Red

4. Hello Time Bomb

5. Zero Orchestra

6. Silent Army in the Trees

7. Born Losers

8. Volcanoes

9. Non Populus

10. The Future is X- Rated

11. Weapon

12. How it Goes

13. Bright End of Nowhere (Acoustic)

Encore

1. Advertising on Police Cars (Acoustic)

2. Sort of A Protest Song (Acoustic)

3. While We Were Hunting Rabbits (Acoustic)
