But if bad is 0 or less, then attention that is bad enough could score a value like -3, -4, etc and thus qualify as attention because it isn't zero at that point.

 

It's like if someone owes you 100 bucks. As far as you're concerned, they are -100, and not at 0. The attention a fat chick gets is like her uglyness borrowing 50 bucks from your eyes.

alternately, the higher your number on the positive side, the better.

I had a similar debate a while ago about the standard "1-10" scale of hotness, and how it's really only 6 or 7 points, because you can't give out a 10 in good conscience, and around 1-3 it's all the same (DO NOT WANT).

 

Edit: The best part was when we were trying to figure out all of the external variables on the scale. For example, every alcoholic beverage you consume increases the score of a girl by .25 points.

you should just inherit the ratings waiver application method. in a case where you weren't in a clear frame of mind to be making a ratings decision, you can apply to have your selection (and subsequent activity) waived due to the consumption of a controlled substance. it's not a get out of jail free card, persey, because it has to be brought before a tribunal of friends who were present during the event in question and the perpetrator obviously has to have rescinded their decision either based on lack of judgement or a clear and consice discrepancy from his counterparts. he can be talked into admitting his rating wasn't sound, or he can admit it freely... either way, some serious razzing is added to the process of an official downgrade. he wont get away easy.

 

like i said, the actual ratings dont really matter, because anything above 0 is acceptable. for example: if you're a 1, you caught my eye, but only because you're not a 0. if you're a two, not only did you catch my eye, but i cruised you. 3 got a cruise and a focus on one area or another. 4 takes 3 a step further with a little bit of a gaze, 5 is the same as 4, with the addition of a second glance at the rest of the package 6 is all of 5 plus you MUST acknowledge her to your buddy 7 is a positive confirmation from your buddy, with an 8, you'll get an instant feeling of threat that you may have just given your find away to your buddy 9 is everything i've mentioned plus you're starting to fantasize and 10.... well, 10 is your wildest dreams, my friend.

I still stand by my statement of negative attention being possible with really ugly girls. I think we're just disagreeing on semantics. I mean a "below 1" or "zero" on your scale of things. I think the red line is what I'm trying to illustrate, the green line is how you feel (because at 1, you are recieving positive attention, rather than none), and the black line is how I would categorize it on a more traditional (1-3 is all baaad) 10 point scale.

Edit: A more concise way of putting it is this: How do you know if a girl is a 0? You need to look at her and then make a cognitive assessment. This is attention. When you choose to turn away in revulsion, you have defined that attention as negative. You can choose to call it 0, or no attention at all, but that is what I would use for someone I did not see at all. So what we come to is this:

 

1-10 Positive attention. You see someone and they catch your eye for some reason.

0: You see no one. "Dude! did you see that girl? She was an 8 at least!." "No, I missed her. I can't comment on her hotness, as she recieved no attention whatsoever."

Below 0: Negative attention. People that, if given the choice, you would rather never have seen.
