I Miss New Wave

Recommended Posts

my absolute favorite Matthew Good Band (and suicide, which I would never do) song. What do you think it's about?

Going to fly to Hawaii

get laid in a lawn chair

drown in a bathtub

fill it with cheap beer

i miss new wave

and movies about losing

or just the parts where it's a-okay

see baby i got something right

the world is screaming

i miss new wave

and real intent

gonna drive to LA

get laid at the rose bowl

drown in a hot tub, fill it with models

i miss new wave

and hearing the scratches on my long plays

or just the part that sound OK

see baby i got something right

when the world is screaming

i miss new wave

and real intent

gonna die in Coquitlam

get laid by a golf course

that I never went to

well it's not a real sport

and I'll miss new wave

and watching you walk away

so go on it's OK

see baby i got something right

see baby i got something right

They way I hear it, it is an autobiography of Matt.

About who he was, about who he could be in America, and how it could all end, for him. Get laid by a golf course, gonna die in Coquitlam.

What do you think?

Read into it what you will, I usually just picture the same story in my head replayed over and over but with a different change in the setting. Hawaii, LA, Coquitlam, it's all the same ending. What was, what could be, and what will be.

And yes, it would have been epic to see this live. Damn I need to see Matt more.

yeah, you're not a bad guy.

but you surely act like a child sometimes.

I would have loved to catch the BM tour when this song was done. I'm sure it would have been great.

I saw MGB play three times while touring BM, and never heard it. I don't think it was done often at all, much like "Let's Get it On".

EDIT: Though looking at the very early shows on mattgood.imgarbage.com from that era, it did seem to be played fairly regularly, so color me mistaken.

It's certainly among his best. I'd say it's about disillusionment. I think the key lyric is in the chorus, not that he misses new wave, but real intent, honesty, something true. For example, "hearing the scratches on my long plays" (which is one of my favourite lyrics in the song). It's something that's flawed, but it's real, and almost perfect in its imperfection, as opposed to something that looks perfect, but is ultimately hollow and devoid of any real meaning.

Am I making any sense?

He sounds sad singing the song

there's a build up to 2:56

he gives the "ooh!"

always gives me a chill

love it. It is feels like a song about realization, realizing something you have been missing, and that you don't need it anyway. there is an end to it all.

Yeah Devil's spot-on. BM is an album of reflection on youth and looking back as an adult, coming to terms with what you thought was, and what now is.

I gotta be a stickler on the lyrics posted though, I mean the last line wasn't even included!

I remember when I first heard this song, I was actually living in Coquitlam at the time. I think it could be about a lot of things, but I've always felt something similar to what Devil said above. The key phrase for me is "real intent", and how it seems like there was something more honest in mainstream art (movies and records, at least) in those days.

Then again, the line "well it's not a real sport" always cracks me up, and I chalk the whole thing up as an exercise in cynical ranting (which I'm all for, BTW).

I think a lot of Matt's songs talk about what people want in life, but yet we screw it up though our humanistic ways. Quite often complaining about the way things are but yet we as a majority are the cause of the problem.

Devil on Rollerskates said it well with a search for or missing something real, something better. Someone else also mentioned the fact of it showing hawaii, LA, Coquilam, it doesn't matter where you are/go, your outcome will be similar wherever you go.

Definitely doesn't come across as suicide... I'm with everyone who believes it's about what was, what is, and what could be...

And Dan, you really need to cut that shit out. You're a smart guy, and you say some pretty lucid and meaningful shit.

yes, I hear it is a telling of Matt's Life, what it is right now, and what it can be, all the way to the end

and I also smile at the "it's not a real spot" line.

just a great great song.

i dunno i find that its the "forgotten song" form Beautiful midnight.

true.

most when listing their favorite Matthew Good (band) songs they tend to list the singles. Avalanche, Giant, Everything is Automatic, personally, when I list my favorite, I Miss New Wave is #1.

personal story, old friend of mine, he bought Beautiful Midnight, the american sans I Miss New Wave release...after I played New Wave for him, He went on ebay and made sure to get the much superior Canadian version of BM

It's not #1 for me but definitely a top 10 or maybe even 5.

Always nice to see little stories like that and damn right "the much superior Canadian version of BM".

Except you're missing one important member from the real version: Going All The Way. You've got A Boy and His Machine Gun listed twice.
