well, a lot of shows have just decided to step aside and let American Idol rule while it's on. shows that try to compete usually get crushed in the ratings. we all know that, as great as the Office is, it doesn't get great ratings. if it's ratings took a slide because of Idol, NBC execs could just cancel it. they never look at the why, just the ratings. (look at Fox and Arrested Development. maybe the poor ratings stemmed from them moving the show around to different nights of the week all the time and cutting down the # of episodes in each season)

Arrested Development by all rights got a 2nd lease on life just by getting renewed for a 3rd season. People just weren't into it, obviously shuffling it around constantly didn't help. But you can't force people to watch something they just aren't interested in.

I read the ratings for the first re-run week and actually The Office's ratings held steady for an encore presentation.

SALARY NEGOTIATIONS DRIVE MICHAEL TO THINK ABOUT HIS OWN PAY-- Darryl (Craig Robinson) decides to meet with Michael (Golden Globe winner Steve Carell) to negotiate a pay increase. Meanwhile, Jim (John Krasinski) deals with the consequences of Pam's (Jenna Fischer) confession to Roy (David Denman) . Rainn Wilson, B.J.Novak, Melora Hardin, Leslie David Baker, Brian Baumgartner, Angela Kinsey, Oscar Nunez, Phyllis Smith, Minday Kaling, Paul Lieberstein, Creed Barton, and Rashida Jones also star.

 

Looks like on April 5th NBC will be having a supersized episode of The Office and it will be a new one too.
