Banks Upset By Hollywood's Sexist Ratings System

Actress Elizabeth Banks has hit out at boardmembers of The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) less than a month after her film Zack And Miri Make A Porno won an appeal to lower its U.S. cinema rating.

 

Banks and co-star Seth Rogen's racy new comedy was initially slapped with an adults-only Nc-17 certification, which would have prohibited people younger than 17 from seeing the film.

 

Filmmaker Kevin Smith fought the MPAA decision and has since won an appeal. The movie, about two friends who launch an amateur porn studio, is now rated R.

 

But Banks is convinced her controversial film and the rating it initially received proves sexism is rampant in Hollywood.

 

She says, "There's nothing worse in Zack and Miri than there was in (horror film) Saw II, and that got an R rating... If I cut your throat and blood spews all over my face, it's an R. But if we have a lovely time together and you spew something else on my face, it's an Nc-17."

So what restriction is R ? Presumably it's not Restricted to everyone. Everywhere. All the time. as QOTSA would so happily like us to believe.

 

The article above makes it obvious that it's more lenient than 'Nc-17' (over 17s) so I'd have to agree, that is fairly mental.

 

I'm pretty sure they're all 18's over here, which is our highest restriction and what 'Zack And Miri Make A Porno' (never heard of it) would've probably got if there was any visible spunk involved !

It doesn't make sense to me. Like on TV, you can see blood and violence, but if someone says Fuck, or if you slip a nipple it makes headlines like you're the anti-christ. It doesnt' make sense.

I guess to explain, NC-17 basically means no one under 17 can see the film in the theater, and that's all.

 

R means you can't buy tickets for the film by yourself if you're under 17, but you're allowed to see it, no questions asked, if someone like a parent/guardian takes you to see the movie.

 

So if a 12-year-old came to the theater by themselves or with a parent to an NC-17 film, either way the kid would not be allowed to see the film regardless of the parents' willingness to consent to it. With an R-rating, the 12-year-old would not be allowed to purchase tickets and see the movie by themselves, but if the parent wants to take the kid to the movie, it would be allowed.

 

Then there are ratings like PG-13, PG, and G, which are all merely suggestions, and people younger than the respective recommended ages can see movies with these ratings without any legal enforcement taking place.

it was funny if you are into smith's flicks. being from pittsburgh where it was filmed it had some really funny extra's the non yinzers wouldn't get.
