New Demo Up On The Mblog

Recommended Posts

Matt's previewing a new demo on the blog right now. Features some neat brass and piano arrangements, kind of reminds me of some of the early demos like "Parable" which are primarily piano driven. Cool vibe, kind of upbeat, great use of dynamics. Could be grasping at straws which I will let you all find on your own, but a working title for an upcoming album may be "Cold Harbor".

I'm going to lounge that link in a second so just check the other thread.

edit: going to be updating this as i get lyrics

Set Me On Fire

They tell you at the scene

Set me on fire

Can't afford to wake up

Can't afford not to [??]

This busted town, in this busted room

Bled out clean

Dance out on the road

There's an elephant on top of me

The girl's there eyes [??] scream

Set me on fire

And I rock the boat

Sing to me

We'll close our eyes

[??] so dangerously

Inside the hole, inside your heart

A diamond key

Unlock your door

Climb your stairs, watch you sleep

[??] criminals will soon retire

Set me on fire

I Once Saw A Magician Cut You In Half (started off like a polyphonic spree song)

Okay, I can't hear Matt's singing but the guitar playing is beautiful. Don't know how I feel about the piano with trumpet sound yet though.

I don't want to make a new news post yet because of what happened with Geoff but I've setup new stubs for the new album, "Cold Harbor." I also hopes he spells it with a 'u' because it's killing my spelling.

Set Me On Fire

They tell you at the scenes

Set me on fire

Can't afford to wake up

Can't afford not to fight (?)

In this busted town, in this busted room, bled out clean

Dance on the road, there's an elephant on top of me

And the girls, their eyes, piano wire/white (?)

Scream,

Set me on fire X2

And I rock the boat

Sing to me

We'll close our eyes

And spin so dangerously

Inside the hole, inside your heart, a diamond key

Unlock your door, climb your stairs, watch you sleep

All my criminals will soon retire,

Screams,

Set me on fire X

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
don't think we're going to get lyrics to Magician. hopefully he'll do another demo with the vocals higher in the mix.
Where are you getting this Cold Harbor information from?
Ok, I Once Saw a Magician Cut You in Half sounds different but I think I already really like what I'm hearing. I can hear what someone said about similarities to his old demos because of the piano but that's about it. This is different from anything he's done I think and I am really curious to see where this goes. I think I'm liking the brass. I hope he keeps it for the album but doesn't over-do it. Nice change from all the strings. I also like the amount of piano on these and hope he incorporates more of that on the next album. I really like the instrumentals of IOSAMCYIH, it sounds nice and is definitely a keeper. Set Me On Fire is also pretty nice, acoustic plus.
Dang it this is kinda exciting! Yet another promising change of sound for Matt!
Set Me On Fire
They tear you at the seams
Set me on fire
Can't afford to wake up
Can't afford not to either
In this busted town, in this busted room, bled out clean
Dance on the road, there's an elephant on top of me
And the girls, their eyes, piano white
Scream,
Set me on fire X2...
And I rock the boat
Sing to me
We'll close our eyes
And spin so dangerously
Inside the hole, inside your heart, a diamond key
Unlock your door, climb your stairs, watch you sleep
All my criminals will soon retire,
Screams,
Set me on fire X5
didn't even know he was doing new stuff already. great news.
"set me on fire" sounds pretty great. really loving it. that's my best shot at the lyrics... "and spin" bit sounds a bit off.
i'd like to hear the other tune with more vocal for sure. and yeah, where did you hear about it being called Cold Harbor?
First, if those were entirely done on GarageBand, then he's getting awesome at it. The drums sounds as if it was done in the studio. Scratch that, if this was mixed properly, it could almost go on an album as far as I'm concerned.
Second, why don't we hear any of the words on "I once saw..."?
Third, the songs are good, better than those on Vancouver for the most part. "I once saw..." is quite destabilizing musically but it's interesting.
Of course that's just my idiotic non-expert opinion given that I haven't been making music professionnally for the last 16 years so maybe I got this all wrong and it's all crap. That's up to Matthew to say anyway.
Musically it does remind me of Ben Folds.
However, I (personally) think the horns sound a bit off, somehow. Probably because they are just samples included in Garageband. I think it actual instruments were used, then it might jibe a bit better for me.
Still, very interesting stuff. I'm glad to see he's experimenting a bit outside his usual zone.
Love the instrumentation of I Once Saw a Magician, and Set Me on Fire takes too long to wind up and reminds me a lot of Silent Army In the Trees. When it does get started though, it's good, but I think I like Magician more for it's unique instrumentation. Both awesome tracks though!
