Cold Water and Los Alamos are among some of the best songs of Matt's career I think.  He hasn't written songs quite like this in a long while.  They partially bring me back to what really drew me to MG's music in the first place.  Haunting sounds like Suburbia, I Miss New Wave, Born to Kill, etc.  Cold Water has a quality to it unlike anything else he has written.  I just love the antiquated lyrics and vibe of it, it's fascinating and powerful in a way.  Los Alamos is very haunting and atmospheric with some lyrics that get at you.  Mysterious gems.

I agree.  I also love Tiger By The Tail.  Amazing lyrics too. 

 

Honestly, I've never seen such a bottom-heavy album in my life.  The album really starts to kick in to high gear with Harridan.

The odd thing to me about this album is I am not 100% sure if I prefer the album or demo versions better when listening to Cold Water, Tiger By the Tail, and Sons and Daughters.  Matt did that good of a job with the demo's and his voice has a raw emotional sound to it that differs from his other albums. Hard to explain it but hopefully others hear it too.

I know I prefer the lyrics from the Harridan demo. To me, I feel like it's a little less personal when he says "I can't see you smile" as opposed to "Daddy can't see you smile" . It just doesn't carry nearly as much weight to me.

This was spoken about a lot at the time the album came out. People shouldn't have listened to the demos so much to begin with. And honestly having heard both, I would say the album versions are far superior.

 

i like what he's doing now, just showing short clips of demos.  I'd like it if he released the full demos after the albums for said demos come out, say a few months later.  All problems solved.

See, I've gone the other way.  I love LOES, I can listen to that album constantly but AOD or CN I hardly ever turn on,  Not saying they are bad albums, they just don't resonate with me, to each their own I guess.

New demo in light of last nights whatever-the-hell-that-was. I for one am very excited for the sounds that he's teased for the next album.

I can definitely hear some old U2 on there. Great song. I wish I was able to write such awesome lyrics. The images he comes up with are amazing.

are you guys sure you missed it? I am listening to it now but I actually left the page open all night and kept hoping it wouldn't disappear.  I will say this though  the song is absolutely amazing. One of the best MG songs in recent memory.  I was impelled to tweet Matt I liked it so much. In the times with the election and such I truly think this song could and would be a mammoth single.   I selfishly feel like Chandler and Joey from Friends when they had the free porn and didn't want to turn off the TV.  I don't want to leave Matt's webpage because I don't want to not be able to hear this masterpiece of a song.

Yeah I saw that and was very excited about it.  It encourages me greatly for the new record because that's a hell of a statement to make, and clearly he feels strong about at least half the album.  It's great to see him so enthusiastic after his earlier in the year crisis about what he could or should do going forward.  Glad to see he is very much optimistic about what he is currently doing.
